Brazilian Wax FAQ

What is a Brazilian wax?

If you know what a bikini wax is, then you already know what a Brazilian wax is. The only difference between the two waxes is that a Brazilian wax removes hairs along the labia (aka your vagina’s lips) and in your behind. You have the option to leave a small triangle or “landing strip” of hair on top — or go fully bare.

Should you wax pubic hair?

Waxing pubic hair isn’t necessarily a requirement when it comes to maintaining female hygiene. But many women feel more comfortable (and even empowered) to not have any hair down there. Waxing your pubic hair is safe, though it can definitely feel like an awkward experience during your first session.

But once you start waxing down there, we’ll bet you’ll never want to pick up a razor again! Nashville Skin Company will support you and make sure you feel safe and comfortable during each and every Brazilian wax.

How long should hair be for a Brazilian wax?

You certainly don’t want your hair too short (you wouldn’t be getting the wax if it was too short), so you will have to refrain from shaving. The ideal length for waxing pubic hair is at least a quarter inch in length. Longer hair is easier to remove, but having too much hair can result in a longer waxing session.

Does a Brazilian wax hurt?

Waxing can hurt, but how much it hurts depends on your personal tolerance for pain and how often you get waxes. If you’re new to Brazilian waxes and have a low pain tolerance, it may hurt more than you expected; but if you’ve had a lot of experience with the Brazilian and a high pain tolerance, it may not be all that painful. It will get better with each wax session.

Do expect some pain if it’s your first time. Thankfully it’s a fairly quick procedure. If you’re worried about pain, we recommend taking an over-the-counter pain relief medication like Advil (ibuprofen) or Tylenol (acetaminophen) a few hours before your appointment.

Can you get a Brazilian wax on your period?

You absolutely can! Just remember your pubic area tends to be extra sensitive during that time of that month, so you might end up experiencing more discomfort than usual. You’ll need to wear either a tampon or a menstrual cup, though, so if you’re a pads-only kind of gal, you might want to reschedule.

How often should you get a Brazilian wax?

It’s recommended you get a Brazilian wax every 3 to 5 weeks. This gives your hair a good amount of time for regrowth, so when you wax, all of the hairs are removed — not just the most noticeable ones.

How long does a Brazilian wax last?

Brazilian waxes can last up to 6 weeks; however, your hair may regrow faster than other people’s do, so it could end up lasting 3 to 4 weeks. Luckily in most cases, pubic hair growth is minimal compared to other parts of the body. Waxing, unlike shaving, pulls out hair from the root, making growth slower and the need to shave less frequent. As a bonus, if you get waxed on a regular basis, you probably won’t need to schedule appointments as frequently!

How much does a Brazilian wax cost?

The cost of a Brazilian wax depends on a few factors, including:

  • the type of wax that’s going to be used (hard wax or soft wax)
  • how much hair is going to be removed (will you leave a triangle of hair behind or get rid of it all?)
  • the facility and location
  • the experience of the person performing the service

In the United States, a Brazilian wax typically costs around $45 to $50 and can cost as much as $70 or more. While this may seem like a lot of money to put down every month or so, the truth is many find it better than taking 30 minutes to an hour shaving it and dealing with more ingrown hairs or razor rashes.
